“He has a valid power of attorney, Claire,” Thomas said, gesturing to his computer screen. “My compliance department reviewed it this morning.”
“That power of attorney was revoked by my legal counsel at nine o’clock this morning,” I lied, keeping my eyes locked on his. “The notification was sent to your legal department.”
Thomas’s eyes flickered, a tiny muscle twitching in his jaw.
“I have not received any such notification,” he said.
“Then you should check your system,” I said, leaning over his desk. “Because if those wires clear, you will be named as a co-conspirator in a multi-million-dollar asset dissipation suit.”
He did not answer immediately.
His fingers hovered over his keyboard, his eyes scanning his inbox.
“The wire transfers are currently in the queue,” he said, his voice losing some of its confidence. “They are scheduled for automated release.”
“Stop them,” I said.
“I cannot simply halt a transaction of this magnitude on a verbal request,” he said. “I need a court order or a signed revocation from both parties.”
“You are protecting a thief, Thomas,” I said. “He is leaving the country, and he is going to leave you holding the bag.”
