The sharp crack echoed off the marble walls.

“This court is adjourned,” she said.

She stood up and walked out of the courtroom through the door behind her bench.

For a long moment, nobody moved.

I sat in my wheelchair, my hands gripping the black plastic armrests.

My body was still weak from the delivery, but my mind was perfectly clear.

I looked at Grant.

He was staring at the defense table.

His expensive gray suit suddenly looked too big for him.

“This is a mistake,” Grant muttered to his lawyer.

“We will appeal,” the lawyer whispered back, but his voice lacked conviction.

Vanessa stepped away from Grant.

She did not look at him.

She looked at Margaret.

“My immunity,” Vanessa said.

“My office will deliver the signed agreement to the district attorney within the hour,” Margaret said.

Vanessa nodded once, turned on her heel, and walked out of the courtroom.

She did not look back at Grant.

Grant watched her go, his jaw clenching.

He turned to me.

“You think you won?” he hissed.

“You don’t know how to run a company.”
