The two security guards in the black suits remained by the glass doors downstairs, looking up toward the light of our window.

Grant pressed a button on his phone and put it to his ear.

“Richard, dial in the managing partner,” Grant said into the receiver.

He waited, his chest rising and falling beneath his tailored gray suit.

“Richard?” Grant said again.

A tinny, sharp voice leaked from the phone speaker, audible in the quiet room.

“Grant, we just received a notice of non-payment from our bank,” the voice said. “The transaction for the firm’s retainer was reversed.”

“Run it again,” Grant ordered. “Use the corporate secondary card.”

“We did,” Richard said. “It was declined for insufficient funds. The entire corporate expense file has been flagged.”

Grant swallowed hard, his throat moving convulsively.

“I will wire the funds from my liquid account in London,” Grant said.

“We cannot perform any services until the funds clear, Grant,” Richard said. “The partners are halting all filings on the divorce petition immediately.”

The line went dead.

Grant lowered the phone slowly, his arm looking heavy.
