Finding the Courage to Stand Alone When Your Own Family Chooses Darkness
“From where?” I asked.
“A sustainable tech fund in San Francisco,” he said. “They wanted him to lead their new green energy portfolio.”
My heart gave a slight thump.
“That is exactly what he wanted,” I said. “He wrote his whole master’s thesis on impact investing.”
“He was thrilled,” Arthur said. “He came home to tell us. He actually looked happy for the first time in months.”
“And Mother?” I asked, though I already knew the answer.
“She went cold,” he said. “She told him he was forbidden to take it.”
“She can’t forbid a grown man from taking a job,” I said.
“She can when she controls the purse strings,” Arthur said. “She told him if he took a job in green energy, she would cut off his trust fund.”
I closed my eyes, feeling a familiar anger rise in my throat.
“She told him it was a personal insult to her,” Arthur whispered. “She said she would not have two children working in the same ridiculous, tree-hugging industry.”
“She did it just to spite me,” I said.
