The young officer swallowed hard, his eyes shifting between my father’s uniform and my pale face.

“Hospital security called,” the officer said.

“Two women matching the descriptions of Patricia and Courtney Parker just tried to bypass the security desk at the neonatal unit.”

I felt the room tilt.

They were trying to take my baby.

“They didn’t get past the second set of secure doors,” the officer added quickly, seeing the terror on my face.

“But they are refusing to leave the lobby, and they are causing a massive scene.”

The heavy door to the interview room opened wider, and Detective Miller walked back inside.

He held a thin manila folder containing two freshly printed sheets of white paper.

“The assistant district attorney signed off,” Miller said.

“We have the warrants.”

“Both of them?” my father asked, his green eyes flashing with a hard, cold light.

“Both of them,” Miller confirmed.

“Grand larceny, conspiracy, and felony domestic abuse.”

“The medical report from your admission this morning sealed it, Hannah,” Miller said, looking directly at me.

“The physician’s report details deep bruising and ligature marks on your wrists and ankles.”
