“Did Courtney use her full weight to restrain you?” he asked.

“Yes,” I said.

“She dragged me backward when I reached for the doorknob.”

“And Patricia?”

“She stood at the end of the hall and watched,” I said.

“She had my purse in her hand.”

“She told me I was unfit.”

“Then she took my heart medication from the kitchen counter.”

“She locked it in her desk drawer.”

“She said I was using the pills to get sympathy from Ethan.”

My father’s pen scratch on his notepad was the only sound in the room.

“That is denial of life-saving medical care,” he said.

“It’s a felony.”

He closed his laptop with a sharp snap.

“Major Harris has the local judge on the line,” he said, checking his phone.

“The digital signature will be processed within the hour.”

“The police will serve the order to Ethan and his mother at their residence.”

“They will have to vacate the property immediately.”

I felt a slight weight lift from my chest, but the fear remained.

“What if they don’t leave?” I asked.

“Then they go to jail,” my father said simply.
