A Quiet Departure From the Shadows of a Chicago Empire
Four federal agents in dark suits entered the office, their badges gleaming under the recessed ceiling lights.
Behind them, two more agents escorted Sophia.
Her wrists were bound in shiny metal handcuffs behind her back.
Her coat was torn at the shoulder, and her hair fell in tangled strands across her face.
“Marcus, please,” Sophia gasped, her voice cracking. “Tell them. Tell them I was working for you.”
Marcus did not look up from the desk.
“She has the private security credentials,” Vance told the lead agent, handing over a thick manila envelope. “The encryption keys, the offshore routing numbers. It is all in there.”
The lead agent, a gray-haired man named Miller, took the envelope and tucked it under his arm.
“Sophia Delgado,” Agent Miller said, his voice flat. “You are under arrest for grand larceny, conspiracy, and wire fraud.”
“He set me up!” Sophia shrieked, twisting her body toward Marcus. “Elena did this! She’s the one who wanted out!”
I kept my face perfectly still, my fingers pressing into the fabric of my dress.
“Take her down,” Miller told his officers.
