Vance’s eyebrows rose.
“She was skimming?” he asked.
“Millions,” I said. “And she was using Marcus’s accounts to cover her tracks.”
“By morning, the grand jury will have this,” Vance said. “We will issue the warrants.”
“But you need to understand what this means for Sophia,” I said.
“When the feds freeze those accounts, her associates will know exactly who took their money.”
“They will know she set Marcus up to take the fall for her theft,” I added.
Vance plugged the drive into his laptop.
“She is going to be cornered,” he said.
“She has nowhere to run,” I said.
“The partners will want their money back, and they will want her head.”
“We can offer her protective custody,” Vance said, his eyes on the screen.
“She won’t take it,” I said. “She is too proud.”
The printer in the corner of the room began to click and whir, spitting out pages of bank statements.
“You did a dangerous thing, Elena,” Vance said.
“I did what I had to do to protect my child,” I said.
