The phone on the desk began to ring.
Marcus did not take his eyes off me as he reached out and pressed the speakerphone button.
“Speak,” Marcus said.
Sophia’s voice filled the room, sharp and breathless.
“Marcus, the gates are compromised,” she said.
“Who is at the gate, Sophia?” Marcus asked, his voice dangerously low.
“It is the Detroit crew,” she said. “They know about the drive, and they want the encryption keys.”
Marcus glanced at the laptop, then at the gun in my hand.
“Elena has the drive,” Marcus said.
“Do not let her leave with it,” Sophia hissed. “If she gets to the feds, we are all dead.”
I did not wait to hear the rest.

“Luca,” I said.
Luca stepped in front of Marcus, his broad shoulders blocking his brother’s path.
“Go, Elena,” Luca said.
Marcus lunged forward, but Luca grabbed him by the arms, slamming him against the desk.
The desk lamp fell, shattering on the hardwood floor.
I turned and ran down the long, dim hallway.
