“What do you mean, no?” she asked.
“I am not running,” I said.
I placed my hand over my stomach, feeling the slight, hard curve beneath my heavy sweater.
“If I get on that boat, Marcus will track the wake,” I said.
“He has people in Vancouver, in Genoa, in Belize.”
“I will spend my life looking over my shoulder at every shadow in a grocery store.”
“My child will grow up learning how to hide in closets.”
Luca looked at me, his eyes widening slightly.
“Elena, he is furious,” Luca said.
“He knows you took the ledger codes.”
“If he finds you here, there is nothing I can do to stop him.”
“I know,” I said.
I walked to the window and looked out into the darkness.
Large, heavy flakes of snow were falling through the beams of the security lights.
The black iron gates at the edge of the property were still closed, but a pair of headlights sat idling on the gravel road beyond them.
The yellow fog lights belonged to a heavy black SUV I recognized.
