A Quiet Departure From the Shadows of a Chicago Empire
The tall buildings were wrapped in fog and falling snow.
The traffic grew heavier as we entered the city limits, the headlights of other cars blinding in the gloom.
My phone vibrated again, twice this time.
I slid my hand into my pocket and touched the cold glass of the screen.
I had to find a way to get away from Marcus before we reached the office.
But I also had to find a way to confront Sophia on my own terms.
We passed the old industrial district, the dark shapes of the factories standing like giants in the snow.
The shipping docks were just beyond them, frozen and quiet at this hour of the night.
Marcus’s phone rang, the sound loud in the quiet vehicle.
He answered it immediately, pressing it to his ear. “Speak,” he said.
He listened for a moment, his face growing tighter.
“Where?” Marcus asked.
He looked at Luca, then back out the window.
“Block the street,” Marcus ordered.
“Do not let her leave the building.”
He hung up and looked at his brother.
“Sophia is already at the terminal,” Marcus said.
