The screen went black, leaving us in the dim yellow glow of the single light bulb.

“He’s coming here, isn’t he?” I asked.

Luca didn’t answer immediately.

He kept his hand on the drape, his eyes fixed on the dark woods outside.

“He knew about this cabin,” Luca finally said. “I didn’t bring you here to hide from him, Elena. I brought you here because it was the only place we could meet him without the feds tracking us.”

A sudden wave of anger washed over me, hot and sharp.

“You set this up,” I said.

“I did what I had to do to keep you alive,” Luca said, turning to face me. “If you ran into the wind with nothing, you’d be dead or arrested in a month. Marcus is trying to save you.”

“By controlling me one last time,” I said.

“By giving you a choice,” Luca corrected. “Once the papers are signed, the money is yours. You can go anywhere. He won’t follow.”

I shook my head, my tears cold on my cheeks.

“I don’t believe him,” I said.

“You have to,” Luca said.
