“This isn’t just debt,” I said, pointing to a recurring line item.
“These are payouts. Millions of dollars.”
Dante nodded slowly.
“Yes. And look who approved them.”
He pointed to a signature at the bottom of a transfer authorization.
The name was written in sharp, elegant cursive.

“Your attorney,” I said, looking at Marcus.
Marcus stayed silent, but his throat bobbed as he swallowed hard.
“She didn’t just write your divorce papers,” I said, the pieces starting to fit together.
“She was doing something else.”
Evelyn laughed bitterly from the floor.
“You think you’re so smart, Alessia,” Evelyn sneered.
“You don’t know the half of it.”
“Shut up, Evelyn,” Marcus barked.
Dante turned his head slightly toward one of his men.
“Gag her,” he said.
The guard pulled a strip of heavy tape from his pocket and slapped it over Evelyn’s mouth.
Her muffled protests died down into angry whimpers.
Dante turned back to the folder.
“These aren’t standard corporate transfers,” Dante said.
