I heard the scratch of a pen on a digital clipboard, and then the door closed with a firm click.

Daniel walked back into the living room, carrying a large, square cardboard box under one arm.

He set it down carefully on the oak coffee table, wiping a speck of dust from the cardboard lid.

“What is that, Daddy?” Chloe asked, jumping up from the floor.

“It’s a surprise for the hospital,” Daniel said, looking at me with a quiet smile.

He pulled a pocketknife from his jeans and sliced through the packing tape with a clean, sharp hiss.

I stood up, stepping closer to the table as he folded back the cardboard flaps.

Inside, protected by thick layers of foam, was a detailed architectural model of the new building.

Daniel lifted it out with both hands and set it flat on the table.

It was the Morrison Family Healing Center.

The miniature building was made of white plastic and warm wood panels, surrounded by tiny green trees and glass-like windows.

On the roof of the model, there was a small, open courtyard with miniature benches and tiny potted plants.
