“Yes, I remember that month,” I said. “We had a shortage of those exact drugs. We had to delay treatments for three children.”

“According to these records, the drugs were never delivered to Harborview,” Daniel said. “The invoice was paid to a dummy supplier registered in Delaware. The registered agent for that supplier is Mark’s company.”

I felt a cold sensation in my stomach.

“They were stealing from sick children,” I said. “Mark always complained about his firm’s cash flow, but I never thought he would do this.”

“He didn’t do it alone,” Daniel said. “James used his position as a prominent donor and board consultant to approve the vendors. He got a kickback for every contract.”

He looked at me, his eyes dark with anger but filled with resolve.

“We have enough to take this to the board,” Daniel said.

“The emergency board meeting is tomorrow morning at nine,” I said. “James is scheduled to present the annual charity budget.”

“Then we will be there,” Daniel said.

He reached across the table and placed his hand over mine.

His skin was warm and steady.
