He looked at me with a soft expression.

“She talks about you constantly,” he said.

“You made her feel safe when she was here for her surgery.”

“It’s my job,” I said. “But Chloe is a special patient.”

“She doesn’t like hospitals,” Daniel said. “But she likes you.”

We began walking toward the main lobby.

The hospital was busy with the evening rush.

Nurses in blue scrubs hurried past us.

Doctors stood in small groups, looking at tablets.

The air smelled of coffee and disinfectant.

“Your ex-husband mentioned James Hendricks,” Daniel said as we walked.

“Do you know him well?”

“Not well,” I said. “We went on one date.”

“It was… a mistake.”

“James is a difficult man to deal with,” Daniel said.

“He has a lot of influence on the board.”

“His family donated the entire pediatric wing,” I noted.

“Yes,” Daniel said. “And he takes that personally.”

“If Mark convinces him that you are a liability, James might try to use his influence.”

“Why would James care about me?” I asked.

“Because he likes control,” Daniel said.

He stopped near the sliding glass doors of the lobby.
