“Ex-husband,” I corrected quickly, my voice shaking despite my best efforts. “The divorce was finalized six months ago, Mark.”
“Details,” Mark said, waving his hand dismissively. “We still have loose ends, Victoria. The condo sale, the outstanding accounts. You ignored my lawyer’s letters.”
“Because you tried to claim the savings we set aside for my fertility treatments,” I said, the old pain rising in my chest.
James let out a short, mocking laugh.
“Fertility treatments? Wow. Sounds like I dodged a bullet.”
My hands clenched into fists at my sides.
The room suddenly felt incredibly hot, the noise of the music and laughter fading into a dull roar in my ears.
“Keep your mouth shut,” Mark snapped at James, though there was no real heat behind it. “This is between me and my wife.”
