I crossed my arms, feeling a sudden chill in the warm library.

The thought of testing Lily made my stomach turn, but not for the reason Ethan thought.

My mind flashed to a night three years ago, a night I had tried to bury in the dark.

I remembered the heavy scent of expensive whiskey and the grip of a hand on my wrist.

It was not Ethan’s father who had cornered me in the dark hallway of the guest house.

But I could not say that name out loud.

“It will be kept completely private,” Ethan said, misinterpreting my silence. “I am using a lab in New Jersey that does not report to the public registry.”

“How long does it take?” I asked.

“Three days,” Ethan said. “We can do the swab while she is asleep.”

I nodded slowly, knowing I had no choice if I wanted Ethan to keep protecting us.

“Okay,” I said. “We will do it.”

Ethan picked up the box and walked toward the door.

I followed him out of the library and down the quiet, carpeted corridor.
